Don't apply to AVID thinking that its going to be an easy ride through high school. The goal of AVID is to help you become a successful student through hard work, experiences, and challenging you in new and different ways. This is the growth that will help you succeed in high school, college, and your eventual career!
As long as you're willing to put in the extra effort and be challenged, the RMHS AVID family has a place for you! Remember that it won't always be easy but it's worth it! |
What do we do during
freshman year of AVID?
Freshman Year of AVID is dedicated to building up your skills as a student. This means:
- Learning how to take Focused Notes
- Learning how to create a schedule and use an agenda
- Using a binder to organize your work
- Learning how to work collaborate with others and work together as a group
- Analyze how you're doing in your classes and work with a study group to get better at your classes
- Learn about what college and university is, and what you need to do to get into one
- Exploring different colleges and see what they have to offer
- Improve your reading and writing skills
- Improve your public speaking skills
- Participate in volunteering within your community
What do I need to do to stay within the AVID program?
Since the ultimate goal of the AVID program is to help students get ready for and apply to college, we focus our requirements on what you need to apply to a majority of four year colleges/universities.
In order to stay in the AVID program, you'll need to do the following:

- Have a GPA of 2.5 or above (for freshman year and sophomore year) and a 3.0 (junior and senior year).
- Be on track to graduate, including completing the A-G requirements (these are classes that you need to take and pass with a C or higher in order to apply to California State schools.
- Take at least one honors and/or AP class each year of high school, including taking at least one AP class by the time you graduate.
- Completing volunteer hour requirements (currently not a requirement because of the pandemic).
What do I need to do to Join AVID?
We're looking for students who meet these requirements:
1. Good grades from middle school (Mostly C's or higher during 7th or 8th grade) and a minimum of a 2.0 GPA during 8th grade year.
2. Willing to be in at least one honor's class their freshman year.
3. Good behavior and good attendance.
4. Be willing to try new things and work together with others.
This you? Excellent! Your next steps are to:
1. Complete an AVID Application. This will be available during course registration for incoming 9th graders.
2. Participate in an interview. This will be done via Zoom or through a phone call.
